The American Consulate

Address: Queen Square, BS1

Date: Georgian period (1714-1837)

In 1792 the first overseas Consulate for the United States of America was set up in this house. There were very strong trade links between Bristol and the USA, and a lot of slave grown and harvested tobacco came into the city. The trade in tobacco helped to make merchants in Bristol rich. Between 1698 and 1807, around 2,100 slaving related ship voyages sailed out of the port of Bristol, and most of them were involved in trading with the American colonies/the USA.
